Most coughs, colds, sore throats and runny noses end without requiring medication, but sometimes a cough and fever are signs of a more serious illness like pneumonia and need to be seen by a trained health worker who is able to refer your little one to a hospital if necessary.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that causes the lungs to fill with fluid and make breathing difficult. Like diarrhoea, it is often preventable or treatable, so it’s very important that parents watch their sick child carefully, know how to spot the danger signs and take their little one for medical attention immediately if any of the danger signs are present.
