The baby born to an HIV positive mom must be given medicine in the first weeks of life to protect him from HIV. This should start immediately after birth. Take your baby regularly for weighing, immunisations and milk powder if you need as it is important that your baby gets regular checkups. At 6 weeks old your baby will be tested for HIV. If your baby is HIV negative, he does not need any more medicine. If he is HIV positive, he needs to keep taking medicine and then should go at 18 months for another test to find out his true status.
