The most important thing for a mother to remember is that she must not mix breastfeeding and formula feeding as this dramatically increases the baby’s chance of getting HIV. For the first six months they must choose to EITHER:

  • Breastfeed the baby (this means breastmilk ONLY - no tea, juice or water) OR
  • Formula feed using a cup. Formula milk is available free of charge at the clinic

Remember breastmilk has a lot of important nutrients for the baby and if possible, one should try and breastfeed. However, if the mother is going to have to be away from the baby, this is not the best option, as you CANNOT mix breastfeeding with formula. If you choose formula make sure the clinic shows you how to boil the water and bottles to keep everything clean and stop the baby from getting sick.
